A woman named Sonora Smart Dodd, inspired by Mother’s Day, wanted to honor her own father, a Civil War veteran and single parent who raised six children on his own. Thanks to her efforts, the first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910.
Over time, the tradition spread across nations and continents. In 1972, it was officially recognized as a national holiday in the United States, and now, countries around the world, including Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, and many others, celebrate fathers annually, typically on the third Sunday in June.
