CELEBRATING OUR JOURNEY OF FREEDOM, UNITY AND PROGRESS!

Every year on 1st July, Ghanaians across the country and around the world pause to celebrate Republic Day, a significant milestone in our nation's history that symbolizes freedom, self-governance, and the unwavering determination of the Ghanaian people.

While Ghana gained independence from British colonial rule on 6th March 1957, it was on 1st July 1960 that the country officially became a Republic, fully assuming control of its governance and replacing the British Monarch as Head of State. This historic transformation marked the beginning of a new era, with Dr. Kwame Nkrumah becoming Ghana's first President and leading the nation toward its vision of complete sovereignty.

A Brief Look Back at History!

The road to becoming a republic was built upon years of sacrifice, courage, and relentless advocacy for self-rule.

Under the leadership of visionary nationalists such as Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana became the first country in Sub-Saharan Africa to gain independence from colonial rule in 1957. This achievement inspired liberation movements across the African continent and positioned Ghana as a beacon of hope for nations seeking freedom. However, independence alone did not complete Ghana's journey.

Between 1957 and 1960, Ghana remained a constitutional monarchy within the Commonwealth, with the British Monarch serving as the ceremonial Head of State, represented locally by the Governor-General.

Recognizing the need for complete political autonomy, a national referendum was held in April 1960, where the majority of Ghanaians voted in favor of establishing a republic.

On 1st July 1960, Ghana officially became the Republic of Ghana, taking full ownership of its governance and democratic institutions. Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was sworn in as the country's first Executive President, ushering in a new chapter defined by national pride, African unity, and economic development.
